Junior University Celebrates Its Success
The Junior University team based at Oldham Sixth Form College hosted an event on Tuesday 25th May to celebrate the success of the Programme in Oldham so far.
The event was an opportunity to raise awareness of the achievements of the Junior University and its students among local councillors, representatives from the local authority, schools and the Connexions service. It also reminded school staff how the JU can support pupils in schools and informed them of forthcoming initiatives and developments within the programme.
The project was established in 2004 and works with students in years 9-11 of all 15 Oldham secondary schools who may have the potential to progress into further education, but lack motivation or study skills. These students are supported by a team of mentors, based at Oldham Sixth Form College, and by Connexions personal advisers. The Moving On report, published by Positive Steps (Oldham), revealed that the initiative has moved from strength to strength and achieved its best ever results in 2009.
