Questions to consider if you are thinking of taking a year out:

  • Are the six courses you are thinking of choosing willing to accept applications for deferred entry?
  • Have you discussed or sought advice about your gap year plans in terms of time and budget?
  • Have you thought about what you want or need to gain from your employment in terms of skills, experiences and rate of pay?

This can be a unique opportunity to do one or a combination of the following:

A development charity recruiting 250 volunteers, aged 18-28 to work in rural communities in Africa and Asia for 4-10 months. Volunteers work in partnership with African and Asian volunteers, raising awareness and changing attitudes to HIV/AIDS and other health, social & environmental issues. Volunteers receive 4 weeks training in country prior to their placement.

Lattitude Global Volunteering (formerly known as GAP) is an independent educational charity founded in 1972, which organises voluntary work overseas in over 30 countries. Lattitude also organises similar exchange voluntary opportunities for overseas nationals in the UK. Currently 1,750 young people are involved annually in Lattitude schemes. Lattitude volunteers work alongside staff in such areas as foreign language assistants, assisting with general activities in schools, caring for the disadvantaged, outdoor education and conservation work.
