Cultural Diversity

This topic is covered by many University courses and its discussion is often part of the interview and selection criteria. The BBC Mentor scheme is also heavily connected to improvement of cultural diversity within their own institution and the practical work produced by students on the scheme.

What is it?
  • A media industry which is open to talent from all communities and all cultures
  • A media industry which reflects the world in which we live today not the world of yesterday
Why is Cultural Diversity important?

Traditionally the media industry in the UK has been dominated by WHITE, MIDDLE CLASS, MIDDLE AGED MEN.
Thus anyone not fitting into this dominant category, had difficulty gaining employment in the industry and seeing positive role models within the products produced.

Which groups have been traditionally excluded?

Women
  • The working class
  • Ethnic Minorities
  • People with disabilities
  • Non-heterosexuals
What are the media doing about this?
  • Formation of working groups e.g. Women’s Media Studies Network
  • Niche products for excluded groups e.g. Bitch Magazine
  • Positive and varied representations in mainstream texts e.g. Bend it Like Beckham
  • Positive discrimination policies to attract employees from varied background into employment
Increasing your employment chances
  • Joining interest/working groups
  • Gaining contacts/work experience
  • Awareness of new niche products (even if they are not targeted at YOU)
  • Critical analysis of current media output
